چکیده

Multi-hop ad-hoc networks suffer from the presence of hidden and exposed nodes that diminish aggregate network throughput. While there are various approaches to mitigating these problems, in this work we focus exclusively on the role of physical carrier sensing (PCS). Specifically, tuning the PCS threshold leads to a trade-off between the ‘exposed’ and ‘hidden’ areas. The contributions of this work are (at-least) two-fold: i. we develop an analytical formulation (assuming constant rate nodes) to determine the optimal PCS threshold. It is shown that choosing the carrier sensing range equal to the interference range is the appropriate optimality principle for PCS based network optimization. An important component of this analysis is an improved link layer model in contrast to much of the existing literature, that leads to significantly new and different insights into enhancing 802.11 network performance. Further, ii. in attempting to support the analysis via simulations with OPNET, several problems with various aspects of OPNET’s implementations of the 802.11 link and MAC layers were exposed. Our description of these issues as well as fixes are likely to be of interest to the broader research community interested in using OPNET for their own investigations in 802.11 network performance. Adapting physical carrier sensing to maximize spatial reuse in 802.11 mesh networks

Spatial reuse in a mesh network can allow multiple communications to proceed simultaneously, hence proportionally improve the overall network throughput. To maximize spatial reuse, the MAC protocol must enable simultaneous transmitters to maintain the minimal separation distance that is sufficient to avoid interference. This paper demonstrates that physical carrier sensing enhanced with a tunab...

Analysis and Simulation Model of Physical Carrier Sensing in IEEE 802.11 Mesh Networks

In IEEE 802.11 Wireless Mesh networks, tuning of the Physical Carrier Sensing (PCS) threshold based has been shown to be an efficient way to balance the hidden vs. exposed terminal trade-off and hence improve aggregate network throughput. Clear Channel Assessment (CCA) indicates channel status by comparing the net RF energy with a suitable chosen PCS threshold to control which nodes may attempt...

Enhancing Efficiency and Effectiveness of 802.11 MAC in Wireless Mesh Networks

The 802.11 MAC protocol is widely used in wireless mesh networks. However, with multi-hop transmissions prevalent in such networks, neither the current 802.11 DCF basic scheme nor the RTS/CTS scheme can achieve full utilization of network capacity for various reasons. First, the 802.11 MAC provides low spatial reuse (low parallelism of transmissions). Second, the collision avoidance mechanism i...

Numerical Analysis of IEEE 802.11 Broadcast Scheme in Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

In this paper, we study the performance of IEEE 802.11 broadcast scheme in multihop wireless networks using an analytical model. Previous works have evaluated the performance of IEEE 802.11 protocol assuming unicast communication, but there has not been an analysis considering broadcast communication. Analyzing performance of broadcast communication is important because multicast communication ...

A measurement driven, 802.11 anti-jamming system

Dense, unmanaged 802.11 deployments tempt saboteurs into launching jamming attacks by injecting malicious interference. Nowadays, jammers can be portable devices that transmit intermittently at low power in order to conserve energy. In this paper, we first conduct extensive experiments on an indoor 802.11 network to assess the ability of two physical layer functions, rate adaptation and power c...
